This project involved two weeks of creating kites and landscape interventions with over 200 children in Sutherland, Northern Cape. In colloboration with SALT (South African Large Telescope) and SAAO (South African Astronomical Organisation), and funded by NAC (National Arts Council.

Upside down umbrellas

Negentropy was a public land art piece and performance commissioned by Lesley Perkes from Art At Work (AAW!) and the Newtown Management District for the When Life Happens festival in Newtown. It consisted of 200 large upside down white umbrellas. The umbrellas where installed in 4 different sites throughout Newtown. When Life Happens is an HIV and Aids awareness festival. The piece was inspired by the concept and phrase Negative Entropy which was introduced by Erwin Schrodingerin in the popular science book 'What is life?', the phrase was later shortened to negentropy to express it in a more positive way: a living system imports negentropy and stores it.

The umbrellas turned on thier heads move from being purely protective objects into vessels with the ability to hold something. These umbrellas held 4 life giving elements for the duration of the festival. Air, water, light and earth. The light was absorbed by solar panel lighting installed in the umbrellas and the earth held medicinal herbs which grew for the duration of the festival.

The performative aspect of the piece involved handing out 100 of the umbrellas to people on the night of the festival opening. The umbrellas where altered so that you could carry them upside down, the people where asked to carry the umbrellas for the evening as a call for the celebration of life and those elements which give life.

Marcus and I created this piece at the Nirox Foundation, an artist residency space in The Cradle of Humankind. It was made for the 10th birthday party for VISI magazine. Over the course of the day while the guests arrived, celebrated and left, Marcus and I constructed a land drawing based on Marcus' Google Earth traces of the area.

This was a first time colloboration between myself and musicians Stompie Selebi and Phanuel Masike. The piece involved the two musicians responding with sound, in the form of spoken and instumental, to my movement. We were surrounded by approximately 300 balloons filled with air, helium and water. I began by singing a lullaby and painting on the walls of the space, this gradually climaxed into something much more aggressive until I had destroyed all the 'elements' around me. It was a very dark space and so the audience experience was mainly informed by sound and glimpses of movement.

2 Seconds and Top Spin

This installation was made for the group exhibition Trajectory, curated by Musha Neluheni for Aardklop 2008 in Potch. It consisted of 48 golf balls suspended in an impossible line of trajectory. The balls represented 2 seconds of video footage, 24 frames per second and the last ball was sunken into the wall due to the imagined force of the top spin.

Deuce was performed as part of The Bag Factory's performance evening Rites of Fealty, Rites of Passage. It consisted of 100 ping pong balls attached to fishing line, the fishing line was thread over the top of a wall and then attached to my arms and legs on the other side. I played a game of ping pong against myself for 40 minutes. My movements were determined by the ball I was playing with and in turn tracked by the movements of the balls outside the room.

EXTREME MAKE OVER little cato manor: The results

At the end of the project we had made a play area, chalk drawing walls and stage (using the side of a burnt down and abandoned house on the property), three vegetable gardens growing various plants according to the amount of shading and sun they recieved in the day, and a compost heap. We also managed to level a lot of the land in an attempt to alleviate water collecting and causing stench and disease, we used broken down rubble to help drain rain water and painted shadows of community members of the walls leading from the road to the settlement. Lastly we transformed the 60 tons of unrecycled trash into a lawned mini mountain which acted as a space for the children to play as well as a marker for 'Little Cato Manor'.

Cascoland Durban 2008 saw me working in Cato Manor with a community dubbed 'Little Cato Manor'. This community was seperated from the rest of Cato Crest by two major roads and consisted of almost 70 shacks. My project involved working with the community, other artists such as Doung Anwar Jahangeer, Clive Greenstone, Greg Streak and Ruben Abels as well as students from Vega Brand Communcations School Durban.

The beginning of the process involved getting to know the community and discussing major issues related to living conditions. We began with a clean up that saw removing 60 tons of unrecyclable rubbish. The cleared out areas became potential spaces for vegetable gardens, play areas and compost heaps.
